Mini Jalapeno Popper Turnovers have the classic flavors of crispy bacon, shredded cheese, spicy jalapenos, and cream cheese all wrapped up in a tender and flaky puff pastry turnover! They’re a portable appetizer that’s perfect for game days, or any party!
I’m pretty sure I could live on appetizers alone! Really, who needs main dishes when there’s overly fattening appetizers? The more cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, bacon, etc. you can squeeze into and appetizer the better!
Add Jalapeno Popper Turnovers to your tailgating menu!
Finger foods are always popular at my house, but when football season begins they are necessary! What’s a football game without all the homegate, or tailgating food? That’s half of the allure of watching football in my opinion! Okay, it’s half of the allure if I’m watching football on TV. When it comes to watching Payson #37, my 5th grader, play football that’s a different story.
Our school is so small we have to combine fourth and fifth graders together to gather up enough kids to make a complete team. Payson is the tallest kid on the team, and the second biggest weighing in at 102 pounds! Most of the kids on the team are tiny, and when they get all lined up at the scrimmage line they look at least two years younger than the other kids. You know what though, these kids play with some serious heart! The line pushes and blocks hard, and the running backs run their guts out!
Watching these kids play football is so much fun, especially when the weather is nice! Payson is obviously on the line and loves being right there in the trenches. Of course college football is exciting to watch, but you know what? I’d watch my kids little Grid Kid Football team over college action any day!
How to handle jalapeno peppers without getting burned.
I posted this Jalapeno Popper Rollups recipe a few years ago, then I shared it to my Facebook Page. One of my followers was so upset that I wasn’t wearing gloves in the video I made. Actually, I did wear gloves when I was handling the jalapenos, and I chose not to show that part in the video. Holy cow, she was relentless in making sure all of my followers knew they were going to get burned if they didn’t wear proper safety attire!
So, here’s your warning: Wear gloves when you’re handling jalapenos! Be careful to not touch your face, eyes, etc. after you’ve been handling the jalapenos or you will get burned.
How to take some of the spice out of jalapenos and make them mild.
What makes jalapenos so hot?
My family is simply can’t handle lots of heat so we think the whole jalapeno is spicy hot. Most of the heat comes from the membranes and the seeds. So if you are wanting a milder jalapeno flavor be sure to remove all the membranes and the seeds.
Boiling jalapenos for a few minutes will make the peppers a little milder. Remove seeds and membranes, then add to boiling water for about 3-4 minutes. The longer they are boiled the milder they become. They will lose their crispy texture the longer they boil too. You’ll have to find your happy medium there!
How to assemble Jalapeno Popper Turnovers.
Make the filling by mixing softened cream cheese, crispy diced bacon, shredded cheese, and diced jalapenos together.
Roll out a puff pastry sheet. Be sure the folds are pinched together. Cut it in 9 squares.
Top each square with a spoonful of cream cheese mixture.
Brush two sides of each puff pastry square. Pull the other side over the filling and pinch the seems together to make a triangle.
Press the edges with the back of a fork to make sure they are completely sealed.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. It makes clean up super easy just incase one of the pastries leaks a little filling out!
Brush tops of each pastry with an egg wash to give it that gorgeous golden brown color as it bakes.
Bake.
Serve immediately!

Whip up a batch of Jalapeno Popper Turnovers and settle in for a good game of football!
Even though Payson loves playing football, I’m not sure how much longer he’ll play. Why? Because he misses being on the farm. He says he’d rather work on the farm than play football. You can take the boy from the farm, but you can’t take the farm from the boy!
So, I guess I’ll keep enjoy cheering these boys on until he can’t stand leaving his calves any longer. Then I’ll be back to college football. For now though…Go Panthers!

Can these be assembled ahead of time, left in the fridge, and baked hours later or even the next day? Or would the puff pastry get too soggy if it sat with the filling in it?
Amy Engberson says
I’m afraid the puff pastry would get soggy if they sat in the fridge for very long. I’d try baking them ahead of time and warming them in the oven or microwave if I really needed to make them ahead of time. My Jalapeno Popper Rollups are similar and best made ahead. Maybe that could be an option.

Your recipe says 1 cup of water is that to mix with the egg? I’m wondering if you meant 1 Tbs? Mis-typed?
Amy Engberson says
Hi Jane! I actually do mix an egg with one cup of water. You won’t need all of the egg water mixture but if you only use one Tablespoon of water it will be too eggy. Enjoy!
