Some families were Born to Farm and mine happens to be one of those! One of the best things about farming is getting to spend plenty of time together! It’s a good thing we like each other, and we like farming because some days it seems like that’s about all we get accomplished! It’s little snacks like S’mores Trail Mix that keep us fueled up for whatever life throws at us!
I was born to be a farm girl! When I was dating my way through college I couldn’t help myself…I just had to have a farm boy! Every boy I dated that wasn’t involved in farming in some way got two thumbs down from me! I knew I wanted an agricultural lifestyle for my family, mostly because that’s how I wanted to raise my kids.
I finally found and married my farm boy and now we own and operate a farm with our three boys! Life is crazier and busier than I imagined yet it’s still exactly what I wanted. Trust me, you have to be born to farm to stick with this lifestyle!
My family is constantly on the go. I’m still happiest when I get to work outside, or when I’m in the tractor. Working together with my family on the farm is my most favorite things to do! Almost all date nights with my husband involve picking up farm supplies, or delivering cattle and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
This past summer we purchased a piece of dessert ground so our cows have a little more room to roam around. The cows on that are living on this pasture ground need to be fed everyday. Today I got to go with Carson, my 16 year old, and help him feed them. This is quality one on one time! This kid was seriously born to farm! He eats, drinks, and sleeps farming!
- First of all, Carson loaded bales of hay on the wagon.
- Next we drove the tractor into the pen. As soon as we arrived at the pasture where the cows were they were all gathered around the gate because they were anxiously waiting for their breakfast! They cows all followed us to the place where we had decided to spread the feed out.
- After we got to the pen I jumped out of the tractor and onto the wagon. Carson put the tractor in gear so it would slowly drive by itself, he jumped out of the tractor (yes while it was driving itself) and hopped up on the wagon with me.
- Finally we started pitching the hay off the wagon and onto the ground where the cows could start eating it! Okay, I will admit I pitch the hay that’s easy to get off the wagon then I let Carson pitch off the heavy parts! What can I say he’s tougher than I am!
- At last we had all the hay pitched off the wagon and all of the cows had nestled into their own little spot and were happily munching their groceries!
I think we pitched about 10,000 ton of hay off the wagon! Let’s just say that I’m calling that my exercise for the day! And I’m not feeling one bit bad about fueling up on S’mores Trail Mix on my way home either!
Now here’s a funny little story about feeding cows and eating snacks! When I was a little girl, Kindergarten age, I had to help my Dad feed cows. I drove the tractor while he pitched the hay off the wagon.
Everyday I would beg my little brother to come with us so he could keep me company while I drove. After a little coercing he usually came along. Well, he came for about half of the time until he got cold and then he would decide to walk home while my Dad and I finished.
My Mom almost always sent a snack with us to keep us fueled up and going strong while we were out feeding. However, whenever my little brother came we never had any snacks. Why?
One particular day after we got home from feeding my mom asked how we liked our snack. What snack? We never had a snack. And that’s when my pesky little brother got a huge smile on his face, piped up, and admitted he ate the snacks everyday while he was walking home after he got cold!
Well, today I’m the Mom and I still think it’s important to bring snacks to keep us fueled up for all the hard work we are doing, but I share my snacks! Having a snack while you are out working just not only makes it a little more enjoyable, sometimes it’s necessary! S’mores Trail Mix starts with Post S’mores Shredded Wheat Bites®, which is an awesome way to fuel your day, then I add a few other goodies; coated chocolate candies, raisins, and marshmallow. Mix is all together and put it in bags so it’s ready to grab and go!
Here on the farm we are always on the go and never know what life is going to throw at us. Some days we eat breakfast at 11:00 in the morning, sometimes we don’t eat dinner until 11:00 at night. It’s important to have a few snacks just like S’mores Trail Mix around so I can toss a bag at my kids when we are crossing paths on the farm!

Even considering all the long days, crazy nights, and hard work that goes into farming I’m still in love with it! I’m in love with it because being outside watching crops grow is much more exciting than being in the house or the office (which I get to spend plenty of time in). It’s a fantastic way to raise kids, and gives both my husband and I lots of opportunities to spend time with them! And I must admit I love every minute of being with them, even if it is while we are pitching hay off a wagon!
If you are looking for a yummy snack that will help you stay fueled up for whatever your day brings you need a couple bags of S’mores Trail Mix in your pantry and ready to go!
