Five Minute Caramel Bugles are basically better than anything Bugles! They are sweet, salty, chocolaty, crunchy, and extremely addicting. They are almost dangerous because they are so quick and easy to make! Perfect for snacking, tailgating, gift giving, or hoarding for yourself!
Five Minute Caramel Bugles
I’m so excited to share this recipe with you today! When I’m traveling long distances by myself I always bring lots of munchies along for the ride. I’m not traditionally a snack person but long solo drives are so boring that I need something to keep myself entertained. I always grab something sweet and salty. Then I try and convince myself to eat just one piece at a time. And I try to convince myself to stop eating before I polish off the whole bag. Those are both good ideas that never happen!
I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Caramel Bugles. I decided to try making my own and adding a little something extra to them. These thing are not only over the top but you can make them in about five minutes! Let’s just say my Five Minute Caramel Bugles and I are ready for another solo trip!
Five-Minute Caramel Bugle Instructions
Melt butter, sugar, and corn syrup in the microwave.
Give it a stir. It will be smooth and creamy like this. Add baking soda. Stir to completely incorporate.
Add Bugles. Gently toss to coat all the bugles in caramel.
Microwave again in one-minute increments, stirring after each one. Microwave for a total of three minutes. Caramel will coat the Bugles a little better and it will be a little darker after each minute.
Pour Bugles on a wax paper-lined baking sheet.
Drizzle with melted semi-sweet chocolate and white chocolate. That whole process took me about five minutes to do! So darn easy!
Let it sit to cool.
Five Minute Caramel Bugles
Now try and resist eating the whole batch before you get them in a bag or serving bowl. I dare you!
Caramel Bugles are quick, easy, and awesome for movie night, tailgating, road-tripping, dessert, school lunches, or pretty much anytime you need a little snack! If you are kind enough to share they would also make great neighborhood gifts at Christmas time!

Made this last night. It was great! I omitted the chocolate cause I was in a hurry to finish this. I did not taste the salt so next time I will add salt flakes when I spread it on the pan, use a sill pad cause a bit stuck to the wax paper and just for variety I think I will add some chopped pecans and use only 7 cups of bugles to make up for the pecans. Would recommend this to anyone!
Amy Engberson says
This snack mix is so addicting! I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as we do. Using a sill pat is genius! And adding additional salt and some pecans would be fantastic!
Tina says
I really liked them. But think mine needed to taste a little more caramel-ly (not sure how you spell that). If I cooked them one more time would that help? They were absolutely easy. Will be making them again for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Amy Engberson says
All microwaves cook a little bit differently so, you might need to cook your caramels just a little bit longer than I cooked mine. Cooking the candy longer would give the candy a more distinct flavor. But, cooking it longer will also make the candy more firm and not as soft and chewy. I prefer soft and chewy! You could definitely try cooking just a little bit longer next time! Let me know how it goes if you try it!

Hello Amy .
I just need to know one thing about your caramel bugles ?
I can see some other pictures in that same page BUT with chocolate ?
Can you just repeat to me (only to be sure ) the only things that goes in
the only caramel bugles ?
I thank you very much in advance and have a nice end of day dear .
Cheers. Johanne .
Amy Engberson says
Hi Johanne! You could make these caramel bugles without chocolate if you’d like. Follow the instructions through step five, then omit the remaining steps. However, if you’d like to drizzle them with chocoalte continue on with the instructions and complete steps six and seven! Either way they will be divine! Enjoy!
Pat says
So super easy and tastes just like the caramel bugles you can buy already prepared if you leave off the drizzles. I could eat the whole batch
Amy Engberson says
Unfortunately, I usually end up eating the entire batch myself! I can’t be left alone with these! Gald you enjoyed them!
Renee says
Hello Amy, This sounds like the perfect salty/sweet snack for my annual Christmas “extravaganza” party. The trick to a great party is planning ahead so I am wondering how many days ahead of time do think this snack can be made without it getting stale or soggy?
Amy Engberson says
Hi Renee! We could be soul sisters! Anything makeahead is a win in my book! I’ve never had these bugles get soggy or stale. I’m guessing you could make them up to a week in advance. The chocolate drizzle might get a little dull looking as they sit. So maybe save that part for a few days before the party. Good luck with your extravaganza! Sounds so fun!
Lisa says
How many bags of bugles do you need to get the 8 cups
Amy Engberson says
Oh my goodness! It’s been awhile since I’ve made these (I’m not sure why) and I don’t have a bag of Bugles in my house to look at the size. I think I usually buy the 14.5 oz bag of Bugles. Hopfully that helps! Enjoy!
Kimbal says
How do you stir without breaking the bugles
Amy Engberson says
It’s a little tricky! It’s more like tossing them very gently so they don’t break into a million crumbs. They should be pretty loose, and not too hard to stir until after they’ve finished the cooking process and are cooled. At that point they will be hard and stuck together if they were close to each other while cooling. Sometimes I leave the stuck together ones in a little clump! Hope that helps!
Chris says
Any thoughts on how this recipe can be recreated using an oven instead of a microwave? Thanks!
Amy Engberson says
Hi Chris! I’ve never tried making this recipe any other way besides using the microwave. If I was going to experiment with it I would try making cooking the sauce on the stovetop, then tossing the dry ingredients with it. Then I would spread the mixture on a cookie sheet and bake it at 250 degrees for an hour, stirring after 15 minutes. Remember, I haven’t tried this method and can’t gaurantee results. This is how I would experiment with it! Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

Making today & looking for oven instructions. Thank you

Does it matter if you use dark brown sugar or light brown sugar?
Amy Engberson says
I used light brown sugar! I’m sure you can successfully substituter dark brown sugar although they will be darker in color and probably have a stronger caramel flavor!
Maria A Pavia says
Thank you ! I will try this receipe out myself ! I love caramel buggles !!!
Amy Engberson says
Oh my goodness! Me too! They are so addicting!
Kristie says
What do you do with the baking soda?
Amy Engberson says
Oops. Just went back and added it to the instructions! Add it to the caramel mixture right before adding Bugles. Hopefully it makes sense now!
Cookin Canuck says
What a fun idea! I used to snack on bugles as a kid, but haven’t had them for a long time. This recipe is an excuse to buy some!
Amy Engberson says
Any excuse is a good excuse for snacking on Bugles, especially if they are covered in caramel!
